One of the things I remember the most from the first time we talked about getting our fostering license is the questions we were asked. People can be fairly blunt with their curiosity.
The most common sentiment can be boiled down to the question: Why?
What kind of legacy are you building today, and more importantly, what kind of legacy will you leave for your family?
Well for me it is a simple reason. I understand my core values; and they inform my life choices. One of my core values is helping the helpless.
Who is more helpless than a child that has been left to figure out how to navigate the world on their own?
Consider the plight of the kids that aren’t alone, but they have to deal with incompetent, uncaring, neglectful, or just plain evil parents. That’s a terrifying concept for young kids!
None of us got to choose who our parents were, and most of us felt, at one time or another, that we got the short end of the stick. Imagine being one of those unfortunate souls that dealt with daily trauma from parents who were addicted, maladjusted, or mentally ill.
Once you step into this world and see the level of need that exists, it is difficult to turn your back on those who need the most help.
So I will ask you the exact question I have heard so many times. Why???
Why do you do the things you do? Is there something that you feel pulled to do to make that would make the world a better place?
What kind of legacy are you building today, and more importantly, what kind of legacy will you leave for your family? Step out of your comfortable places and change your world!
